Today Windstream, a FORTUNE 500 Company,  announced the launch of their SD-WAN service for businesses nationwide. I am thrilled that after a rigorous selection process they picked VeloCloud Cloud-Delivered SD-WAN as the product powering their service. While this further strengthens our position that “The Cloud Is The Network” it also underscores the fact that selecting the right architecture is essential for the short term ROI opportunity and also for the long term service expansion in the years ahead. Windstream has a unique position in the market and they are customizing their SD-WAN to exploit that position. They have significant strengths…

SD-WAN for the 10,000+ Site Enterprise

What works for a 10-site, or 100-site network is often not feasible in a really large network. Even small, straightforward activities—say, going out to a remote site to install new CPE, configuring it to become part of the network architecture, routing, policies and security measures—become arduous and enormously costly when multiplied by thousands, or tens-of-thousands. This multiplier effect, in combination with a number of trends—centering around traffic and applications shifting to the cloud; physical things like CPE and firewalls being virtualized—complicate large network renewal decisions to evolve legacy WAN and gain the flexibility and agility needs of today’s businesses. For large and…

In 1997 a senior editor at the Economist, Frances Cairncross wrote a book titled ,”The Death of Distance: How the Communications Revolution Will Change Our Lives (Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Press, 1997).”  alluding to the speed of technological change impacting consumers’ lives. In 2016 I believe we started seeing the death of distance for Enterprises, with the acceleration of SD-WAN adoption. What an eventful year 2016 turned out to be! No, I am not talking about the political upheavals around the world or about Brexit, or that a sequel to the Big Lebowski was announced, eventful as they were. What…

There is no Cloud. Really.

Thanks to Chris Watterston for the above #2 best selling sticker on Sticker Mule! Since ‘tis the season to be jolly, it is akin to a kid who figures out – there really is no Santa, it is just someone’s Dad in a red suit. But rather than the downside of the revelation, for me, this captures the advantage of the Cloud revolution for IT in general, and SD-WAN in particular. Lots of businesses have moved their IT – data centers, applications and storage to the Cloud, and networking is just the fourth phase of that movement to the cloud. The…

SDN, SD-WAN, NFV, VNF: What Is All This?

Inscrutable alphabet soup. Even the fully expanded terms are only slightly more digestible. But they’re not truly all that confusing: the underlying principles are elegant and illuminating. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an architecture—first defined circa 1995—that physically separates the network control plane (decisions about traffic flows) from the forwarding plane (moving chunks of data between points A and B). Practically this simply means controlling network hardware devices (think routers, switches, Wi-Fi access points) by using software that is physically hosted elsewhere (think an orchestrator or controller platform). A SDN architecture provides numerous advantages: it abstracts (and simplifies) the entire…
